CARIS Software Licensing

Teledyne CARIS has adopted a new licensing technology. This upgraded licensing is entitlement based with node locked activations, thus removing the need for the traditional physical hardware dongles.

We are retiring the use of HASP dongles for new versions of CARIS software.

To move forward with changing technology and to provide our customers with more flexibility.

  • Easy activation (online or offline)
  • No more need of a separate licensing tool for local key users
  • No more need of physical hardware dongles that can be damaged or lost
  • Faster software purchase and setup as no shipment is required
  • Improved license usage transparency for network license environments
  • Commute functionality to take network based seat out of office for a specified timeframe

The upgraded licensing works on an “entitlement and activation” basis, meaning that a license will be tied to the specific hardware, where CARIS software is installed on. License activation will require an entitlement, which will be created for eligible users once they wish to upgrade.

The entitlement certificate will be provided by Teledyne CARIS Customer Services via email. The certificate contains an entitlement ID that will be entered during the first-run sequence when new software is installed and the license will be automatically activated if connected to the internet. This will be done through a new built-in License Manager tool, which can also be accessed later on.

This is easiest done deploying a network commuter license model. One machine in the network will act as license server, which all other machines check into to obtain a license. This also allows taking a license offsite, when needed, through the new commute check in/check out functionality.

For users not wanting to define a license server and therefore using the local license model, licenses can be moved from one machine to using the revocation process. See section .

When working in an air-gapped environment the user must send Teledyne CARIS the locking code from the first run sequence of the License Manager option in the software, or from the License Manager application running on the server. Based on the locking code, a license file will be generated by Teledyne CARIS and provided to the user for use on this specific PC.

Instructions on how to do this are provided by Technical Note available on https://support.teledynecaris.com in the Utilities download section.

1. Ensure that your computer has an active internet connection.

2. Configure your firewall(s) and open the port 5093, protocols UDP and TCP, Inbound and Outbound.

If this is not possible, or the problem still persists, please contact Teledyne CARIS Customer Service to assist you in the offline activation process.

Moving an activated license from one computer to another is done through a process of revocation and activation.

Revoking a license removes the license from the computer where it has been activated, allowing the license to be used on another computer. Because a license can contain activations for multiple products, an activation ID (AID) is used to revoke one activation at a time, leaving any other activated products unchanged. Once an activation has been revoked, the functionality associated with the AID will no longer be available on the original computer. The entitlement ID (EID) associated with the license can then be used to activate the product on another computer.

Revocation can be performed for local licenses using either an online method or an offline method; the online method is recommended, if available. The revocation tools are accessed from the Revoke local licenses button in the top-right corner of the License Manager dialog box.

For moving a network license from one server to another, the revocation is not yet available as a self-service option. Please contact Teledyne CARIS Customer Services to assist you.

At this time, the new licensing is available for the Bathy DataBASE and HIPS and SIPS suites of products. The new licensing has been rolled out to CARIS products in the following major/minor releases

SOFTWARE VERSION
BASE Editor 5.2
Bathy DataBASE Server 5.2
BASE Manager 5.2
CARIS Onboard 2.1
Engineering Analysis Module 5.2
HIPS & SIPS 11.1
HPD 4.0
LOTS Limits and Boundaries 5.2
Paper Chart Composer 4.0
S-57 Composer 4.0

NOTE: Once an entitlement has been issued, the legacy HASP licenses for previous versions of the software will remain active until the next renewal cycle of the HASP licenses. At that time they will be removed from the HASP dongle and previous versions of the software cannot be used anymore.

New software CARIS License Manager will be required to control the network licensing environment at the client site. With this application there will also be a License Administration tool provided in order to monitor and manage the client connections.

New commute functionality will enable network license users to check in/check out licenses from the network for a defined period of time, to allow travelling with a license offsite.

NOTE: The new License Manager can be run on the same license server as used for your current CARIS software not using the new licensing techniques. The two license services operate separate from each other and in co-existence.

As the new technology replaces the HASP software, the dongles should be returned once there are no more active licenses on them. Please return them to your local Teledyne CARIS office.

In exceptional circumstances a hardware key can be still be provided, subject to an additional fee.

Use of the hardware key will require the presence of the hardware key and a license file on the computer in question in order to operate the software.
